This copy has no previous owner names or other writing or inscriptions. Pages are clean and bright, without any foxing. Stated 7th impression on front flap, price clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain. The text block is clean and bright, bound in the light brown colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows no shelf wear, slight rubbing to the dustjacket at the folds, no soiling to note, or bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. 8 J.R.R. Tolkien The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression in Dustjacket
London Allen & Unwin 1956 2nd Edition Original Cloth Near Fine Near Fine 12mo - over 6¾ J.R.R. Tolkien
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1956, this is the eighth impression. The book is in Near Fine condition, with a little light fading to the spine from sunlight shining thru the white sections of the dustjacket. The dustjacket is clean and bright with no soiling and only the slightest of rubs or wear to the corners of the spine folds. No previous owners names or other writing to be found. No foxing marks or offsetting noted. The boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with completely unbumped corners. The title verso has the full printing history up to this eighth impression of 1956. The original dustjacket is incorrectly marked the 7th impression, but would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. It is not unusual for extra dustjackets to be used on subsequent impressions till they were used up. The dustjacket is price clipped and in Near Fine condition, with only the most minor of rubbing to the edges, with a tiny bit of splitting at the tips of the folds. There is one small closed tear at the bottom of the front panel approx. 3/4", no loss but a little rubbing to the edges of the tear. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the top edge slightly faded but still showing the original green topstain. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. 9 J.R.R. Tolkien The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1958 10th Impression in Dustjacket
London Allen & Unwin 1958 2nd Edition Original Cloth Very Good Plus Very Good Plus 12mo - over 6¾ J.R.R. Tolkien
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1958. The book is in Very Good Plus condition, with a slight bit of fading to the spine and top edges of the boards. The book shows some spine slant, but no soiling and only the slightest of rubs or wear to the edges. Small previous owners name and date to the top corner of the first blank page, also a notation in blue ink to the top right corner of Thror's Map, 'CM7', no other writing noted. No foxing marks or offsetting noted. The boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with completely unbumped corners. The title verso has the full printing history up to this tenth impression of 1958. The original dustjacket is correctly marked the 10th impression, and would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. In 1957 (Ninth Impression book) Houghton Mifflin ordered a number of sheet sets to be imported from A&U for the US 1957 Ninth Printing, however after A&U had already printed the full run, HM backed out of part of the order due to import costs and reduced their order by 1,000 sheet sets. So A&U assumed they would have 1,000 more UK books than originally planned and as such they had Jackets produced for this overrun. Subsequently, HM changed their mind again and took the 1,000 sheet sets they had canceled, thus leaving A&U with 1,000 extra Ninth Impression Jackets. They simply used those extra jackets on the 1958 Tenth Impression Books. So there should be 1000 copies of the 1958 UK Tenth Impression book with a Ninth Impression Jacket, which would make this one of the 3,500 copies of the Tenth Impression books in the Tenth Impression Jackets. The dustjacket is not price clipped and in Very Good Plus condition, with only the most minor of rubbing to the edges, with a tiny bit of loss at the tips of the folds, and to the edges. It shows a bit of soiling, mainly to the white areas, but still shows beautifully. A remarkable copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.

London Thames and Hudson 1980 1st Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Plus 8vo - over 7¾
This book provides a provocative and highly original explanation for the phenomenon of Tolkien's works on the modern imagination. Correlates between Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious and Tolkien's mythology for Middle-Earth. 19 Tolkien, J.R.R. The Hobbit, 1976 Folio/Deluxe Misbound Editions, Both States.
London Folio/Allen and Unwin 1976 First Thus Quarter Leather Near Fine No Jacket, as Issued 8vo - over 7¾ J.R.R. Tolkien
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. These are the 1976 Folio Edition, 1st Impression's. This set of two books, are the first Folio Society publication of The Hobbit. They are examples of the two Folio Society variants, both in Near Fine condition with slipcase's. These are the true 1st printings of the 1st Folio Edition, with the Folio 1979 maroon colored edition being the 2nd printing of the Folio edition (per Hammond). Here you have both states with one having the Folio Society Title page, and the second Title page does not state "Folio Society" as it should, instead the pages are identical to the 1976 A&U Deluxe edition! Per Hammond, the Folio Society was to take the Deluxe edition pages and remove certain pages from the beginning (title page, copyright page, etc) and replace them with the Folio pages. However, a very few of the books were bound by the Folio Society with all of the original Deluxe pages included and not replaced with Folio pages, but with the binding being the Folio format. Very Scarce indeed! Gilt is still bright and untarnished on these books. Most minor of scuffing to the leather on the spines, a few liquid spots to the exterior of the slipcase's, a slight bit of browning to the fold areas of the maps in one copy the only faults. Very unusual and hard to find both variants. Additional digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.
