Tolkien Signed by Author The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The 1968, 1st Single Volume Edition, signed by the author to the half title page, fully rebound by the Chelsea Bindery in Crimson leather. All edges trimmed and gilded. Marbled endpapers and elaborate tooling to the edges, showing the Chelsea Bindery imprint. Illustrated Wraps and Spine bound in following the text block. Text block is clean and bright, with no names or writing to be found. The full red leather binding features Tolkien's "Ring and Eye" design, from the original dustjackets, with single gilt rule to the edges of the boards. The spine of the book features raised bands with gilt ruled compartments, with the Title, Author, and a smaller version of the 'Ring and Eye' gilt stamped. The size makes it very comfortable to handle, and the heavier paper stock makes a nice high quality copy, versus the thinner more fragile India paper offered in other single volume editions from this era. A spectacular presentation of this classic of fantasy literature, housed in the matching red leather edged cloth slipcase lined with crushed felt.. Provenance is provided in the form of a letter from Bloomsbury Auctions, dated 20/04/2000 which authenticates and verify's the Signature and the full description of the book before it was rebound by Chelsea Bindery. This is the 1st (First) impression published 21st of September 1937. The original decorative map endpapers have been professionally lifted, rebacked, and reused as endpapers, with a minor repair to the upper corner on the rear free end paper, all in excellent condition. This is the 1st and only early UK edition published with Tolkien's famous frontispiece, The Hill: Hobbiton across the Water', in his original black and white line drawing only. One of only 1500 copies of the original print run, which sold out within months of it's release. This copy has been elegantly rebound in full Dark Green Morocco leather. Features Tolkiens orignal wraparound design of 'Mountains and Dragon' gilt stamped on the boards and spine. Has a small previous owner's name on the front free endpaper (map), no other writing or inscriptions. Tolkien The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the 2nd printing of 1937, featuring the color illustrations by the author. A wonderful copy, newly rebound in dark green morocco leather, gilt stamped with Tolkien's Dragon to the front boards, surrounded by a single gilt rule to the front and back edges. Also features Black Leather inserts, with the author and title in gilt ruled compartments, seperated by raised bands on the spine. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase, to show and protect. This is the 2nd (Second) impression of the first edition that was published 21st of September 1937. It has the 4 color and 9 mono plates all in excellent condition. The second impression is important for the addition of the 4 color illustrations by the author. This is the 1st and only early UK edition published with four of Tolkien's color illustrations. One of only 1877 copies of the original 2300 that survived the bombing of London in November 1940. The original decorative map endpapers have been removed and new printouts used as endpapers. This copy has been elegantly rebound in full Dark Green Morocco leather, by Temple Bindery of Oxford. Pages are clean and bright, a few insignificant smudges scattered throughout the book. The 'Contents' page has a small triangular loss of about 1/4" wide and tall, at the bottom of the page, but does not infringe on any text. No names or writing in the book. Very minor foxing to the blank pages at the beginning, a few scattered smudges thoughout the book, and it shows a couple of minor stains to the endpapers, mostly to the gutter of the rear endpaper 'Thror's Map'. This copy has been elegantly rebound in full black morocco leather with raised bands to the spine, and features a large gilt stamped Bowing Hobbit to the front boards. The spine features green morocco leather insets for Title and Author, compartments for the Dwarve's Hat, Publisher and date gilt stamped to the bottom of the spine. A matching full leather clamshell case, has the large Bowing Hobbit to the front boards of the case, with a single gilt rule around the edges, and to divide the compartments to the spine.
