The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition
Tolkien, J.R.R.
London: Harper Collins, 2009. Bill Sanderson. De Luxe Edition. Full-Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, The number 88 of 500 of the UK Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition, published by Harper Collins in 2009, the first publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien. Copy number 88, edited and signed by his son, Christopher Tolkien, to the Limitation Notice. The story tells the epic story of the Norse hero Sigurd the dragon slayer, the revenge of his wife, Gudrun, and the Fall of the Niflungs. From the publisher's release statement, "Many years ago, J.R.R. Tolkien composed his own version, now published for the first time, of the great legend of Northern antiquity, in two closely related poems to which he gave the titles The New Lay of the Volsungs and The New Lay of Gudrun. In the Lay of the Volsungs is told the ancestry of the great hero Sigurd, the slayer of Fafnir most celebrated of dragons, whose treasure he took for his own; of his awakening of the Valkyrie Brynhild who slept surrounded by a wall of fire, and of their betrothal; and of his coming to the court of the great princes who were named the Niflungs (or Nibelungs), with whom he entered into blood-brotherhood. In that court there sprang great love but also great hate, brought about by the power of the enchantress, mother of the Niflungs, skilled in the arts of magic, of shape-changing and potions of forgetfulness. In scenes of dramatic intensity, of confusion of identity, thwarted passion, jealousy and bitter strife, the tragedy of Sigurd and Brynhild, of Gunnar the Niflung and Gudrun his sister, mounts to its end in the murder of Sigurd at the hands of his blood-brothers, the suicide of Brynhild, and the despair of Gudrun. In the Lay of Gudrun her fate after the death of Sigurd is told, her marriage against her will to the mighty Atli, ruler of the Huns (the Attila of history), his murder of her brothers the Niflung lords, and her hideous revenge. Deriving his version primarily from his close study of the ancient poetry of Norway and Iceland known as the Poetic Edda (and where no old poetry exists, from the later prose work the Volsunga Saga), J.R.R. Tolkien employed a verse-form of short stanzas whose lines embody in English the exacting alliterative rhythms and the concentrated energy of the poems of the Edda." -- Christopher Tolkien. Features a color frontispiece of a facsimile page from J.R.R. Tolkien's original manuscript. Fully bound in Brown Leather with matching full leather clamshell case, stamped in gold foil with a unique motif of Sigurd's horse, Grani. Printed on superior quality paper and including a silk ribbon marker sewn into the textblock. Matches the recently released UK Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition of The Children of Hurin. The Lord of the Rings - Original 1963 UK Deluxe Set.
J.R.R. Tolkien
London: Allen & Unwin, 1963. J.R.R. Tolkien. 1st Edition. Original Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1963, these are the 13th/10th/10th impression of the 1st Edition. The true 1st Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. The cloth on the Two Towers is somewhat loose, appears the cloth has released from the boards, but cover is still completely intact and shows only minor wrinkling. The textblock is clean and bright. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, and all still have the original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Very Good condition, with some marks and rubbing to the spines with some degradation of the gilt stamping on the Fellowship and Return. The Two Towers is still bright and undamaged. The gilded edges of all the books show some rubbing and loss of the gilding. The books have no writing or inscriptions in any of the books. The set of books are housed in a reproduction of the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "triptych" artwork. A very scarce set of the original Allen & Unwin 1st Deluxe Editions, less than 1000 sets produced (worldwide). Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien Bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. An unusual set, very few available for purchase at any time. An opportunity to acquire a set at a reduced price, due to the less than immaculate condition of the exterior. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection.

The Lord of the Rings - Original 1963 UK Deluxe Set, with Original Pauline Baynes Triptych Slipcase.
Tolkien, J.R.R.
London: Allen & Unwin, 1963. J.R.R. Tolkien. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of. Original Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The true 1st Edition, Allen and Unwin 1963 Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. The gilt is still bright, without any rubs or tarnishing. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, with an original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Near Fine condition, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, no writing or inscriptions in any of the books. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The spines of the books are a matching black color, possibly a tiny bit sunned. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has a couple of minor bumps to the corners, and a little rubbing to the edges, no color loss to speak of. Clean and bright, without any corner splits, a lovely case that is one of the looser fitting ones I've run across. Allows the books to be easily removed, versus the tighter ones that are sometimes very difficult to withdraw the books. One of the nicest sets overall I've run across in years. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets were produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, but is whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce set and the orignal publishers slipcase illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection.
