The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Harper Collins Slipcased Set
London: Harper Collins, 2000. Alan Lee. First Thus. Hard Cover. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Harper Collins in 2000, this set takes the 1997 Alan Lee illustrated edition of the Hobbit and the 1991 Alan Lee illustrated edition of The Lord of the Rings, and releases them together in their own publishers slipcase. The slipcase features one scene from each book, and is accented by a gold border on the top and bottom edge that features the runic script as found on the dustjackets. The slipcase has a couple of bumped corners, no splits to the seams as are common. As the Hobbit is a wider book, the slipcase has an offset spacer to allow both books to fit the box evenly. The Hobbit is the 1997 edition, 5th impression, released to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the original publication. The dustwrapper was modified to match The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion illustrated editions. Most of the changes are to the text on the spine, but small changes were also made to the runic border. This one also features a price on the inner flap which is an indication that you own a later, modified edition. A full 22 color illustrations, and 38 pencil drawings, beautifully illustrated edition by Alan Lee. The Lord of the Rings is the 1991 edition, 12th impression, produced to commemorate the centenary of Tolkien's birth. The dustwrapper is distinctive to some others as it has the title in a black oval shape, a design introduced during the 11th impression, and is also priced on the front flap. There are 50 full color illustrations by Alan Lee, and you can see how his ideas impacted the movies directed by Peter Jackson. A beautifully illustrated set, not available to the US market, it makes a wonderful slipcased set for the Tolkien Collector. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The set of books is comprised of The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, published in 1975. Stated Reset (New Edition) 1975 this copy shows some minor rubbing to the covers, light spine creases, and a bit of fading to the spine. The second book is comprised of Farmer Giles of Ham, and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, stated as Second impression, Unwin Books, 1977. This copy is closer to Near Fine with very little rubbing to the covers, no creases or fading to the spine. The third book of the set is comprised of Tree and Lear, Smith of Wootton Major, and The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, also stated Second Impression of 1977. The Hobbit and Other Stories, a Three Book Set in Publishers Slipcase
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Four Paperback Book Boxset from 1974, Unread, Uncreased Spines, Very Near Fine Condition, Red Slipcase.
New York: Ballantine Books, 1973. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Mass Market Paperback. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A four volume paperback set housed in the Publishers original Red pictorial slipcase, featuring the Heraldic symbols that were drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien. These illustrations include the ones designed to represent Feanor, Idril Celebrindal, Earendil, Luthien Tinuviel, Fingolfin, Elwe, Luthien Tinuviel and Finwe. This is one of the few published sets that includes all four books, The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. This is also the first set to feature the illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien, as the covers of the book and slipcase, rather then the Barbara Remington designs as found on previous issues. These paperback books are in Near Fine condition. All four books appear unread, showing no creases to the spines. Still fit into the box, not as tightly as usual. No names or markings, the textblock is very clean and bright, unlike most sets from this era. The slipcase has a few rubs and bumps, mainly to the corners and edges, plus some to the bottom with some spots of color loss. Overall a Near Fine set in wonderful condition. The Hobbit is a 42nd printing from September 1973, The Fellowship is a 43th printing September 1973, The Two Towers is a 40th printing September 1973, and the Return of the King is a 39th printing September 1973. Hammond and Anderson's, A Descriptive Bibliography notes that "after the 40th (March 1973) and no later than the forty-second (September 1973)", the Hobbit was sold in sets with the Lord of the Rings, housed "in a slipcase, gold (or blue, or red) printed paper over boards, featuring Heraldic devices by Tolkien." This design was used until 1983, when the covers were changed again. So this set is one of the earliest from that period. Very unusual to find a set that has not been damaged after 40 years. The textblock is not aged, with the pages crisp and clean, not tanned as is common. No names or markings, no creases to the spines, and no edgewear to the covers. A great find for the collector. Minor rubbing to the slipcase, the only minor fault. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1256

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Four Paperback Book Boxset from 1974, Unread, Uncreased Spines, Very Near Fine Condition, Red Slipcase.
The Hobbit, 1976 Folio/Deluxe Misbound Editions, Both States.
London: Folio/Allen and Unwin, 1976. J.R.R. Tolkien. First Thus. Quarter Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. These are the 1976 Folio Edition, 1st Impression's. This set of two books, are the first Folio Society publication of The Hobbit. They are examples of the two Folio Society variants, both in Near Fine condition with slipcase's. These are the true 1st printings of the 1st Folio Edition, with the Folio 1979 maroon colored edition being the 2nd printing of the Folio edition (per Hammond). Here you have both states with one having the Folio Society Title page, and the second Title page does not state "Folio Society" as it should, instead the pages are identical to the 1976 A&U Deluxe edition! Per Hammond, the Folio Society was to take the Deluxe edition pages and remove certain pages from the beginning (title page, copyright page, etc) and replace them with the Folio pages. However, a very few of the books were bound by the Folio Society with all of the original Deluxe pages included and not replaced with Folio pages, but with the binding being the Folio format. Very Scarce indeed! Gilt is still bright and untarnished on these books. Most minor of scuffing to the leather on the spines, a few liquid spots to the exterior of the slipcase's, a slight bit of browning to the fold areas of the maps in one copy the only faults. Very unusual and hard to find both variants. Additional digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #684

The Hobbit, 1st US Edition, 1st Impression, 3rd State, with Custom Slipcase.
Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1938. J.R.R. Tolkien. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good copy of an extremely collectable book. This is the 1st Edition, 1st Impression, 3rd State, with the publishers device on the title page. The maps are in the proper order as per the List of Illustrations. This book also has the half title page as called for, and has the corrected 'Chapter VII' on page 118. It features the 4 color and 9 black and white illustrations by Tolkien, all of which are present and in extremely clean and bright condition. The text block and maps are also very clean and bright. No names or inscriptions. One minor bump to the front edge of the boards, has parted the cloth. The textblock edges are dusty, with a couple of spatter marks on the bottom edge. The original cloth shows a little soiling to the boards, and some light wear on the tips of the spine, where the cloth has split, but there is no loss. The only fault with this book, the front boards have an ink spill and a few spatter dots on it. Other than the spill marks, the boards are very clean and only lightly soiled. I have provided a one piece facsimile of the very rare 1st Dustjacket, as well as a custom slipcase to help protect and show this lovely classic of modern fiction. The Hobbit, an Illustrated Edition, with Clear Dustjacket, Rankin Bass Deluxe Edition.
New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc, 1977. Arthur Rankin, Jr. And Jules Bass. First Thus. Hard Cover. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the first fully illustrated Deluxe Edition with the original text of the classic. The illustrations and cinematic sequence drawings are based on the animated film by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass. The book shows some rubbing to corners and spine ends of the illustrated covers, and the dustjacket show some rubbing and minor areas of color loss. The dustjacket is complete, but has been repaired with clear (hopefully archival?) tape. Part of the front flap appears to have been torn off, and repaired with the tape. Very nicely done, considering the large area torn. The dustjacket is of clear mylar with a colorful illustration of Smaug swooping down on the Dwarves and Bilbo on the front boards, and Smaug resting on his mound of treasure on the rear boards. It also shows some minor rubbing and slight loss to some of the color illustrations on it. No marks or writing, names or inscriptions noted. The book is in Very Good Plus condition, with over 230 full color illustrations. The black front free endpaper has been folded over, leaving a white stripe down the page, see photo. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1955 7th Impression in Dustjacket
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1955. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A fantastic copy of an early printing of The Hobbit. The 1955, 7th overall printing, or the 3rd printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Near Fine copy in Very Good Plus/Near Fine original dustjacket, designed by Tolkien, featuring his Mountains & Dragon design, as found on the original UK Editions. Stated 7th impression on front flap, price clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain. One of probably only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The text block is clean and bright, bound in the light brown colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows no shelf wear, slight rubbing to the dustjacket at the folds, no soiling to note, or bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. A previous owners name and date to the first blank page, no other names or any other writing. The dustjacket shows the smallest amount of wear to the top of the spine, and the folds at the flaps have the smallest of chips, none larger that 2 or 3 mm. The jacket shows a light amount of soiling in the white sections, and the spine is lightly tanned. Overall a beautiful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in this condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #557
