Full Black Leather cover, The spine of the case has three raised sections, featuring raised bands, inlayed compartments with Crimson or Burgundy Leather, gilt stamped with Title & Author, split between the sections. Also has a small Ring & Eye Device from the original UK Dustjacket, along with publisher and date. The rear cover has the JRRT Monogram gilt stamped. Tolkien. 1st UK Edition, 2nd Impression published by Allen & Unwin in 1937. Newly rebound in dark green morocco leather. First Edition, Second impression published 1937, same year as 1st impression. Decorative map endpapers lifted and reused, with 4 color and 9 mono plates all in excellent condition. The second impression is important for the addition of the 4 color illustrations by the author. This is the 1st and only early UK edition published with Tolkien's color illustrations. One of only 1877 copies of the original 2300 that survived the bombing of London in November 1940. This copy has been elegantly rebound in full Dark Green Morocco leather. Features Tolkiens original 'Mountains and Dragon' design gilt stamped on the boards and spine. Has no writing or inscriptions. Pages are clean and bright, a few minor finger smudges scattered through the book, none obtrusive. Absolutely no foxing noted in the text block or on the maps. All edges have been trimmed and gilded, with a black ribbon marker sewn in. Original cloth spine bound into the rear. A beautiful copy, in a fabulous finely crafted binding. A magnificent 1st Edition, 1st Impression, newly rebound in dark green morocco leather, gilt stamped to with Tolkiens Dragon as from the original cloth boards, with a lovely green cloth covered clamshell case, stamped in black to match the original covers. This is the 1st (First) impression published 21st of September 1937. The original decorative map endpapers have been professionally lifted, lined, and bound in following the marbled paper endpapers. The maps are in excellent condition, with no names or markings. This is the 1st and only early UK edition published with Tolkien's famous frontispiece, 'The Hill: Hobbiton across the Water', in his original black and white line drawing. One of only 1500 copies of the original print run, which sold out within months of it's release. This copy has been elegantly rebound in full Dark Green Morocco leather, by The Temple Bindery. Features a beautiful flourished signature mounted to the front pastedown. The textblock shows no names, writing or inscriptions. Pages are clean and bright, a few insignificant smudges and some minor spots to the pages, scattered thru the book, no other markings or tears noted. All edges have been trimmed and gilded. The Lord of the Rings - Comprised of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King
London: Allen & Unwin, 1963. J.R.R. Tolkien. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings, Quarter Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring, 13th impression published by Allen & Unwin in 1963. The Two Towers, 9th impression published 1962. The Return of the King, 10th impression published 1963. All three books have been quarter bound in red leather, which is showing some scuffing and marking to the spines. The binding is distinguished by five raised bands, gilt rules, the Title and Author gilt stamped in two of the compartments, decorative device to the others. The edges of the text block are not trimmed, with the red top stain still visible, though slightly dusty and a bit faded. The boards also have a single gilt rule to the edges. All original maps are present, but have been slightly haphazardly mounted. One small hole to last page in the Return, from map being mounted. A handsome middle printing set of the famous trilogy. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by George Allen and Unwin, 1954/54/55 1st UK Edition, all 1st impressions. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 1st impression published July 29th, 1954. One of 1500 printed for the UK. The Two Towers is a 1st impression published November 11th, 1954. One of 2250 printed for the UK. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published October 20th, 1955. This copy is the 1st State, as per Hammond & Anderson, with the signature mark '4' and having the slipped type on page 49. Correspondence with Wayne Hammond has indicated he has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Bibliography, making this the later or 2nd State. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, no tears or extra folds. An extraordinary set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is newly rebound in Black Morocco Leather, all edges trimmed and gilded, with Gilt stamped design of Tolkiens original line drawing "The Gates of Moria", split between the spines of the three volumes. The set is further characterized by custom Marbled endpapers by Joan Ajala of Australia, silk ribbon markers, and is housed in a custom clamshell (drop spine) case in matching Black Leather. The front boards of the case and books feature Tengwar (Tolkien's Elvish writing) titles and author, as well as Tolkien's own Ring and Eye design from the original dustjackets. The rear of the case is gilt stamped with the Tengwar Rune Poem, from the original text. The rear of the books are gilt stamped with the JRRT monogram. The front boards of the books have the individual book Titles and author in Tengwar as well as the Ring and Eye design gilt stamped. A true Tolkien Collector's dream set. This is a fabulous design, executed by one of America's premier binders. All are very clean and bright, with a couple of small smudges on occasional page margins, a small amount of foxing on the first couple of pages of the Fellowship, the other two are not foxed, and none have any writing or signatures.
