This is the 1st printing of 1937, featuring the black and white frontispiece of The Hill: Hobbiton across the Water', with all illustrations by the author. A wonderful copy, showing some soiling to the cloth, a previous owners name to the first blank page. Housed in a custom full leather and marbled paper slipcase, to house and protect this classic. This is one of the original 1500 copies,1st (First) Impression of the 1st (First) Edition that was published 21st of September 1937. It has the two maps and ten illustrations, by the author, all in excellent condition. The original decorative map endpapers have no markings or previous owners names. Thror's Map in the front, is in relatively clean condition with the pastedown brighter than the free end. The Wilderland Map is also in clean condition, again with the slightly darkened free end, both maps are whole and have no splits along the gutter. The book exhibits some spine lean, but the binding is still firm and tight. The text block is relatively clean and bright, The top edge is dusty and faded, with the green topstain just barely visible. The edges of the textblock are lightly soiled. The cloth covered boards with the dark blue decoration of Tolkien's Mountains and Dragon design, are a bit darkened along the spine and the edges. The tips of the spine are pushed with no loss, lower front corner has some loss to the cloth revealing the boards underneath. A wonderful copy, exceedingly scarce in any condition in this day and age. A tremendous opportunity to acquire this classic of modern fantasy literature. A facsimile of the original dustjacket is provided with this book. The full leather slipcase is made to reflect the original Mountains and Dragon design by the author, and features complimentary hand marbled paper covered trays. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1954. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A very scarce copy of an early printing of the US Edition. The 1954 Houghton Mifflin Edition, 6th overall printing, or the 2nd printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Very Good Plus copy in Very Good Minus condition original dustjacket designed by Tolkien, as found on the original UK Editions. Stated 6th printing on front flap, not priced or clipped, with the handwritten $2.50 price, noted as printed in Great Britain. This is the only jacket that states "In Preparation" above "The Lord of the Rings" on the back flap. Only the 2nd printings of the 2nd edition have this notation. One of only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The text block is clean and bright, bound in the teal colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows very little shelf wear, slight rubbing at the folds, no soiling to note, a couple of bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink, still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. No previous owners name or writing, other than one small pen mark on page 98, marking a reading place, perhaps? The dustjacket shows a considerable amount of wear and loss to the top of the spine, and the folds at the flaps have wear and color loss. The flap folds are starting to split and have been reinforced with archival tape, as well as a few other tears to the edges. The main faults are at the top of the spine, the lower front area of the spine, and a small missing segment of the border at the top right of the front panel. The jacket shows a light amount of soiling in the white sections, and the spine is lightly tanned. Overall a wonderful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in almost any condition. A custom slipcase to house this lovely edition is provided, featuring the Mountains and Dragon design as found on the UK cover, to protect and show this classic of fantasy literature. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1956, this is the eighth impression in its matching eighth impression dustjacket. The book is in Near Fine condition, with a little light fading to the spine from sunlight shining thru the white sections of the dustjacket. The dustjacket is lightly soiled and shows some loss to the spine ends, mainly the top. A bit of rubbing and loss to the flap fold corners, only minor rubbing to the edges, other than the upper spine area. No previous owners names or other writing to be found. No foxing marks or offsetting noted. The boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with one slightly bumped corner. The title verso has the full printing history up to this eighth impression of 1956. The original dustjacket is correctly marked the 8th impression. The dustjacket is price clipped and in Very Good condition. The edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the top edge faded but still showing a slight tint from the original green topstain. A custom slipcase will be provided to protect and show this beautiful copy of an early printing of this much sought after children's classic. A beautiful copy of an extremely scarce early Hobbit. The 1957 printing, of the 2nd Edition (1951), or the 9th printing overall (1937). This copy is a stated 9th impression from the dustjacket, published by Houghton Mifflin from sheets imported from Great Britain. Stated 9th impression on front flap, not priced or clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain on the title verso. The 9th is the last impression with only 1000 sheets imported from Allen & Unwin, also lacking the printing history on title verso to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. Later impression had 2500 or more copies imported, making the later impressions much easier to find today. This book features the original dustjacket with the Mountains and Dragon design by the author. The dustjacket shows some light tanning to the spine but very little tanning or soiling to the white areas of the dustjacket. The boards show no soiling or marking, clean and bright with a little rubbing or shelfwear, mainly to the tips and the spine edges. The text block is clean and bright, without foxing or any markings. No previous owners names or any writing noted. No bumped corners and the most minor or rubbing or shelfwear to the edges. The dustjacket, is in Near Fine condition, showing on the most minor of rubbing, with a few very small flecks of color loss, to the top and bottom of the spine and flap folds. The panels are in wonderful condition, no tears, foxing or any soiling to speak of. A small amount of rubbing and minor loss to the tips of the flap fold areas. A beautiful clean copy, one of the copies with the teal boards stamped in blue, that are very hard to find. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, with the red and black ink still showing clear and bright against the endpapers, a very small bit of browning to the gutters. A fabulous comprehensive set of Tolkien's major works, housed in a custom full black leather slipcase with gilt stamping. All four of the books are the 1st impressions with their original publishers slipcase. This Collection features four of Harper Collins 21st Century Deluxe Slipcased Editions. Comprised of the 2004 Harper Collins 1st impression Deluxe Slipcased Edition of The Hobbit, the only edition to feature all 13 of Tolkien's own illustrations for the book, reproduced in full color, together with his original maps reproduced as he originally intended, but not previously achieved in nearly 70 years of publications. Also included is the 2004 Harper Collins 1st impression 50 Anniversary Deluxe Slipcased Edition of The Lord of the Ring's, which features the pages from the Book of Mazarbul, as illustrated by J.R.R. Tolkien, which he originally intended for inclusion in the First Editions, but were not used previously. Included as well is a copy of the 1st impression 2007 Harper Collins Deluxe Slipcased Edition of the Children of Hurin, which includes a ninth color plate by Alan Lee not featured inside the standard hardback. Also features the Helm of Hurin, as designed by Alan Lee, gilt stamped to the exterior. The final book included is The 2007 Harper Collins 30th Anniversary Deluxe Slipcased Edition of The Silmarillion is also a 1st impression. The newly reset edition feature's Tolkien's, 'The Halls of Manwe', as the full color frontispiece, with the slipcase gilt stamped with the heraldic symbol he designed to represent Luthien. This edition also includes Christopher Tolkien's two color maps, including a fold out map of Beleriand, and as a Preface, Tolkien's original letter of 1951 containing his account of the mythology of Middle-Earth. All books are in Near Fine condition. All books are 1st impressions, housed in their original publishers slipcase showing minor rubbing to the slipcases, with a new double walled leather covered slipcase, gilt stamped to the sides with JRRT monogram, "J.R.R. Tolkien Deluxe Collection" and the individual book titles. Photos are of the actual books not stock photos.
