London: Allen & Unwin, 1961. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1961. The book is in Near Fine condition, with no soiling or wear at all. No bumped corners, with a bit of fading to the spine and lower edges where sunlight has penetrated thru (or over) the white portions of the dustjacket. Previous owners gift inscription to first blank page, no other writing, foxing, or offsetting noted. The boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design The title verso has the full printing history up to this thirteenth impression of 1961. The dustjacket is marked as the 14th impression, but would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. The dustjacket is price clipped and in Very Good Plus condition, with only the most minor of rubbing to the edges and tips of the flap folds, and with a bit of loss to the upper spine fold areas where there are two chips/tears with some minor color loss. Colors are bright but slightly soiled, with some darkening of the spine. The edges of the text block are only lightly soiled and unfoxed. A custom leather slipcase to house this lovely edition is provided, featuring the Mountains and Dragon design as found on the UK cover, to house and protect this classic.
