London: Allen & Unwin, 1977. Limited/Numbered. Full-Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. Originally published by Allen and Unwin in 1977, reserved and later bound in Red Leather and released in 1982. This is the Super Deluxe Limited Numbered Edition. "This is copy number 189 of the first one thousand copies off the press of the first edition of The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, reserved for later publication in this collector's edition." A Near Fine example of the very hard to find Super Deluxe Limited Edition issued to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the first publication of The Silmarillion. Collected and edited by Christopher Tolkien after his fathers death. Original publishers full red leather binding, with raised bands, gilt stamping, and top edge gilded as issued. The book features red silk ribbon marker bound in, raised bands and gilt stamped Title, Author, and Publisher on the spine. The front boards features the JRRT Monogram gilt stamped in single gilt ruled box. Blind stamp of the heraldic device Tolkien designed to represent Luthien Tinuviel to the rear boards. On the first free endpaper, the Publisher's Limitation Plate, gives the Limitation number of 189 of 1000. The map of Beleriand and the Lands to the North appears as a fold-out map, and is printed in black and red, no tears or marks noted, very clean and bright. Noted points or error's: Page 330 line 4 shows no period after Feanor. Page 352 line 39 has an italicized "and" in 'Lord of Waters and King of the Sea'. Making this the First State of the First Impression, not surprising being one of the first 1000 printed. A striking example of a very hard to find book. Matches in size and style the 1987 Unwin Hyman Super Deluxe Limited Edition of the Hobbit. No foxing, no previous owners name or any other writing. The only fault to the book is a slight bit of fading to the red leather on the spine, no offsetting, no scratches or shelfwear to the bottom edge of the boards. The slipcase is the original publishers slipcase with the opening edged with matching red leather, also in Near Fine condition with light rubbing to the bottom edges and corners of the red cloth covering. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.
London: George Allen & Unwin, 1978. J.R.R. Tolkien. 1st Thus. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Tolkien Library, a collection of Tolkien's five most famous books, collected together by Allen & Unwin in 1978, housed in the original publishers slipcase, featuring a photo of J.R.R. Tolkien by Billett Potter to the rear side of the slipcase. A very scarce set in Very Good Plus condition. No names or writing in any of the books. All books are not clipped, and only the Hobbit is lacking the Allen & Unwin priced sticker. No foxing or offsetting to any of the books. Each book has its original topstain, without fading or any marks. The Return of the King shows a damp stain at the top of the front panel and goes around to the spine, no damage to the textblock. A fabulous set, without any major faults. A minor bump to the side corner on the back, along with a little rubbing to the corners. The illustrated paper has some wrinkling where it appears it may have been damp, along the upper edge on one side. The green cloth on the top and bottom of the case is clean and unmarked. The books fit tightly enough so that I have not covered the dustjackets in protectors, as I do not believe they would fit in the case properly. The Hobbit is the 1st impression of the 4th Edition published in 1978. The Lord of the Rings are also published in 1978, the 10th/9th/9th (77) impressions respectively. The Silmarillion is the 4th impression of 1977. All five books are the original copies to be housed in this collection, a rare opportunity to add to your own Tolkien Library. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.
