Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1974. J.R.R. Tolkien. Second Edition. Original Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1965 Second Editions, 12th/11th/11th impressions issued in 1974. An exceptionally clean and bright set of this classic of fantasy literature still housed in the original publishers slipcase. The set is in original cloth with a set ofl unpriced dustjackets, now in removable archival protectors. The black cloth boards feature Tolkien's original "Ring & Eye" device stamped in various colors, with matching topstain and dustjacket color on each book. The books are all in Near Fine condition, a small smudge on the Fellowships title page, with their matching Very Good Plus dustjackets with minor edgewear, mostly to the top of the spine and fold areas. No names or writing or foxing. The dustjackets show some slight fading to the colors on the spine, much less than the norm. Dustjackets are unpriced, and none of the books has a blindstamp on the rear boards, meaning these are the trade edition books and slipcase, with book club edition dustjackets, likely replaced at some time in the past. The topstain on the books is unmarked and a bit dusty, slightly darkened. The set is housed in the original publishers slipcase with the label to the front, still in Very Good Plus condition, a couple of repaired splits, a few scuffs to the top and edges of the slipcase. Original maps are attached at the rear, in Fine condition, with no extra folds, or tears to any of the maps. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
