J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Near Fine / Very Good Plus. Item #1982
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the 5th impression of the 2nd Edition, or 9th impression overall, published in 1957 by Allen and Unwin. Decorative map endpapers in Fine condition, bright and clean, no names or writing. Color frontispiece, mono plates, and text block all in Fine condition. The boards show no bumped corners, with the cloth clean and bright, unmarked. This copy is in its original stated 9th impression, price clipped dustjacket in Very Good Plus condition. The dustjacket shows minor rubbing and a tiny bit of color loss at the tips of the folds, one small closed tear at the upper rear fold area of the spine. No tears along the edges, and virtually no loss to the top and bottom of the spine. The dustjacket is lightly soiled with a bit of tanning to the spine, showing no foxing in the white portions of the front and back panels. Pages are clean and bright, no tears, a tiny blue stain to the front panel (maybe crayon?), no foxing or offsetting. A beautiful collectable copy. Scarce in this wonderful condition. A custom faux leather clamshell, stamped with Tolkien's JRRT monogram, is provided to protect and show this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.
