J.R.R. Tolkien. First Edition. Original Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Very Good Plus / Very Good. Item #2272
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Comprised of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Published by George Allen & Unwin, 1962 1st Editions, 12th imp/9th imp/9th imp. An original and lovely set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The books are housed in the original publishers slipcase, showing some wear and rubbing to the edges, with a little soiling and fading to the label and the exterior of the box, which appears it may have been painted at some point in the past. The books are in Near Fine/Very Good Plus condition, with no previous owners name or writing to the exceptionally clean and bright endpaper of each volume. The exterior cloth is clean and bright, with a few light dampstains to the Two Towers, the rest show no stains to the nice bright red cloth, with the gilt untarnished and bright. The books are clean and tight, and the maps are attached in each volume, and show no extra folds or tears. The Fellowship has a burn mark to the upper edge of the textblock, effects the last four pages, but doesn't exceed a couple mm's in depth. The original dustjackets are complete and the correct impression for the books. The dj's are in Very Good condition with some rubbing and edgewear, with some loss, mostly to the tips of the spine and fold areas. The dustjackets show considerable tanning but no fading to the spines. The entry edges of the slipcase show some wear along with a short split to the upper entry corners, but it has protected the books very well for almost 60 years. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.
