The Lord of the Rings, Comprised of the Fellowship of the Ring, the Two Towers, and the Return of the King, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin in 1959-1961. A lovely set consisting of the 9th impression of 1960 for The Fellowship of the Ring, the 6th impression of 1959 for The Two Towers, and the 8th impression of 1961 for The Return of the King. These books and dustjackets are all in Near Fine/Very Good Plus condition, with some scuffs and edgewear, mainly to the spines of the books. No foxing or offsetting to the text block or endpapers. Neat previous owner's name to the front free endpaper of The Two Towers, no other writing in any of the books. None of the dustjackets are price clipped, all show the original $5.00 price, except the Fellowship which was unpriced until 11th or 12 impression. All maps are mounted in the rear as issued, in Fine condition with no tears or misfolds. A beautiful, tight, bright set still shows a hint of the yellow topstain, with the top edges being a bit dusty. Not many sets in this lovely condition anymore. A custom slipcase, covered with red leather gilt stamped featuring Tolkien's own Ring & Eye design along with The White Tree of Gondor stamped to the front and rear panels, and the JRRT Monogram to the rear, providing protection and as a beautiful display of this highly collectable set.
