Beren and Luthien, UK Deluxe Edition, Sealed in Shrinkwrap
London: Harper Collins, 2017. Alan Lee. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Beren and Luthien, by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by Harper Collins in 2017. The UK Deluxe Edition, most likely a 1st impression of the newest release from the myths and legends of Middle-Earth, as conceived by the author. The tale of Beren and Luthien was written after the authors return from the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The story grew and changed over the years, with the developing of Middle-earth and it's intertwined history and associations. The love between Beren, a mortal man and Luthien, an immortal elf, was opposed by her father. Setting Beren on an impossible task before he may wed Luthien, he must rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, of a Silmaril. Christopher Tolkien shows us the story, from its initial conception, thru the changing aspects found in the authors later verse and prose. The story is brought to life with nine full color illustrations, plus a color frontispiece, along with numerous line drawings by the illustrator, Alan Lee. Housed in the publishers matching slipcase, featuring a Luthien Tinuviel motif, designed by Alan Lee, to the front panel. Photos from an opened copy are used for illustrative purposes only. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1850

The Hobbit, an Illustrated Edition, with Clear Dustjacket, Rankin Bass Deluxe Edition,
New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc, 1977. Arthur Rankin, Jr. And Jules Bass. First Thus. Hard Cover. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the first fully illustrated Deluxe Edition with the original text of the classic. The illustrations and cinematic sequence drawings are based on the animated film by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass. The book shows almost no rubbing to the corners of the illustrated covers, but does have one minor split in the middle of the back panel, not at an edge. The dustjacket shows the most minor rubbing and very little color loss. The binding is still square, tight and strong, no splitting to the endpapers as is common. The dustjacket is of clear mylar with a colorful illustration of Smaug swooping down on the Dwarves and Bilbo on the front boards, and Smaug resting on his mound of treasure on the rear boards. The mylar dustjacket has no tears, only the one split approx. 1" long that does not approach the edge where it might split further. Very unusual for one to have survived this well after almost 40 years. No marks or writing, names or inscriptions noted. The book is in Near Fine condition, with over 230 full color illustrations.
