The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Four Paperback Book Boxset from 1977, Still Sealed in Shrinkwrap.
New York: Ballantine Books, 1977. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Mass Market Paperback. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A four volume paperback set housed in the Publishers original Gold Foil covered slipcase, featuring the Heraldic symbols that were drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien. These illustrations include the ones designed to represent Feanor, Idril Celebrindal, Earendil, Luthien Tinuviel, Fingolfin, Elwe, Luthien Tinuviel and Finwe. This is one of the few published sets that includes all four books, The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. This is also the first set to feature the illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien, as the covers of the book and slipcase, rather then the Barbara Remington designs as found on previous issues. As this set is still sealed, although the shrinkwrap is splitting and starting to fall apart a bit, it is not possible to tell the exact printing or publishing date, however the exterior of the case does note the Heraldry designs are copyright of George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1973. Also the numbers on the spines of the books match up with another set that all were issued in November of 1977. Hammond and Anderson's, A Descriptive Bibliography notes that "after the 40th (March 1973) and no later than the forty-second (September 1973)", the Hobbit was sold in sets with the Lord of the Rings, housed "in a slipcase, gold (or red) printed paper over boards, featuring Heraldic devices by Tolkien." This design was used until 1983, when the covers were changed again. So this set is from that period, 1973 - 1983. Very unusual to find a set that has not been opened after 30 or 40 years. The case shows a couple of mildly bumped corners, shrinkwrap is still mostly intact with a few splits and holes that are common, and the spines of the four books are in perfect condition. They do not appear to be faded or tanned in any way. A near perfect find for the collector. Interior photos and photos of the covers are from another opened set, just for illustrative purposes. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1904

The Hobbit, 50th Anniversary Edition, with Slipcase Still Sealed.
Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1977. J.R.R. Tolkien. First Thus. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Hobbit 50th Anniversary Edition, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published in 1987 by Houghton Mifflin to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the original publication of The Hobbit in 1937. This copy is still sealed in the original shrinkwrap, with a small hole in the shrinkwrap on the front, doesn't seem to have marked the slipcase. Gold leatherette with red and green foil stamping in matching slipcase with green, black and gold label, illustrated with full color plates, monochrome line drawings, maps, top edge stained red-orange, complete with all plates and unabridged. The red foil stamping on the spine appears to be a little faded, might have been exposed to sunlight over the years, even though still sealed. The photo's of the opened book are taken from a similar copy as this one is still sealed. It is possible that this is a Book Club Edition as there are no markings to indicate which it might be on the sealed exterior. Digital photo's are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1756

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1946 1st Edition in Dust Jacket, with Custom Clamshell Case.
London: Allen & Unwin, 1946. J.R.R. Tolkien. First Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Fourth impression published 1946, the final publication of the 1st Edition. An exquisite copy, showing no foxing to the maps or pages. The decorative map endpapers are clean & bright in Fine condition. Two neat previous owner's names, one to front pastedown (map) hidden by the dustjack flap, and another to the front free endpaper (map), no other writing or marks noted. Color frontispiece, 8 mono plates, and text block all in Near Fine condition, one small singe mark to the edge of the textblock, did not burn into the paper. The slightest bit of spine lean, with a bit of rubbing and shelfwear to the bottom edges of the boards, corners lightly bumped. A bright and beautiful well protected copy, very unusual for these early 1st Editions to survive in this condition. Produced in conformity with the war time standard's, with the distinctive 'War Time Economy Standards' title verso. This copy has its original price clipped dustjacket, which has had restoration and conservation work performed. It was originally missing the bottom 1" of the spine and upper flap fold areas, and had numerous splits to the flap and spine fold areas, which have been infilled, strengthened and repainted as necessary. Makes a beautiful presentation of this wonderful book. The dustjacket is in an archival protector, to help preserve this restored and repaired original dustjacket. Pages are clean and bright, no tears or stains. Still shows a bit of the green topstain, a little faded and dusty. A bit of shelf wear to the edges of the lower boards, very lightly bumped corners. The original decorative green cloth, is unsoiled without any fading to the spine area. A beautiful collectable copy. Uncommon in this beautiful condition. Custom slipcase with Dark Green leather spine, gilt stamped to reflect the spine of the original 'Mountains and Dragon' design by the author. Photos of dustjacket before restoration are shown for detail on restoration and conservation performed. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1954 US 6th Impression with Dustjacket
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1954. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A very scarce copy of an early printing of the US Edition. The 1954 Houghton Mifflin Edition, 6th overall printing, or the 2nd printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Very Good Plus copy in Very Good Minus condition original dustjacket designed by Tolkien, as found on the original UK Editions. Stated 6th printing on front flap, not priced or clipped, with the handwritten $2.50 price, noted as printed in Great Britain. This is the only jacket that states "In Preparation" above "The Lord of the Rings" on the back flap. Only the 2nd printings of the 2nd edition have this notation. One of only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The text block is clean and bright, bound in the teal colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows very little shelf wear, slight rubbing at the folds, no soiling to note, a couple of bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink, still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. No previous owners name or writing, other than one small pen mark on page 98, marking a reading place, perhaps? The dustjacket shows a considerable amount of wear and loss to the top of the spine, and the folds at the flaps have wear and color loss. The flap folds are starting to split and have been reinforced with archival tape, as well as a few other tears to the edges. The main faults are at the top of the spine, the lower front area of the spine, and a small missing segment of the border at the top right of the front panel. The jacket shows a light amount of soiling in the white sections, and the spine is lightly tanned. Overall a wonderful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in almost any condition. A custom slipcase to house this lovely edition is provided, featuring the Mountains and Dragon design as found on the UK cover, to protect and show this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The text block is clean and bright, a few spots of foxing to the preliminary pages, does not affect the color frontispiece or title page, bound in the teal colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows very little shelf wear, slight rubbing at the folds, no soiling to note, the spine is darkened, but the corners are unbumped. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The dustjacket shows a bit of loss to the spine fold corners, while the flap folds show only the most minor rubbing and slight color loss. A couple minor closed tears along the edges. A Very Good Plus/Near Fine copy of an extremely scarce early Hobbit. The 1956 printing, of the 2nd Edition (1951), or the 8th printing overall (1937). This copy is a stated 8th impression from the dustjacket, published by Houghton Mifflin from sheets imported from Great Britain. Stated 8th impression on front flap, not price clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain. According to Houghton Mifflin records, one of 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, possibly to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The book features the original unpriced dustjacket with the Mountains and Dragon design by the author, with a $2.50 bookstore price stamp to the front flap. The boards show no soiling with a slight moisture ring to the front boards, the only markings, the slightest bit of rubbing to the spine fold edges, no significant shelfwear to note. The text block is clean without any writing or markings, slight toning, without foxing or offsetting, a small moisture or discoloration to a couple of pages around the title page. No bumped corners, no significant faults. The dustjacket is not price clipped, and has no markings. The front flap shows a previous fold down the middle, now straightened out and the dustjacket is now covered in an archival protector. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket, Custom Slipcase. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 UK 8th Impression in Dustjacket.
London: Allen & Unwin, 1956. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1956, this is the 8th impression. The book is in Very Good Plus condition. The covers show a bit of fading to the edges and where the white areas of the dustjacket didn't protect from fading as well. Previous owners name and 1956 date to 2nd blank page, no other names or writing noted. The dustjacket is price clipped front and rear, with the publishers new price printed to the front flap. Two months into production of the 7th Impression of the Hobbits, along with the remaining original 7th Impression dustjackets, Allen & Unwin changed the price as found on this true UK 7th impression dustjacket. The jackets were price clipped -- both front and rear flap -- by Allen & Unwin publishing company itself, with their new price of 12s.6d overprinted below the impression notation on the front flap. So this copy is one with the overprinted price of 12s 6d. A bit of foxing to the flap edges and to the white areas of the dustjacket, with the spine considerably darkened. The verso of the dustjacket also shows the darkening, but does not seem to have transferred to the book itself. Some edgewear and chips with color loss at the top of the spine, and almost none to the bottom. Tips of the flap folds show some loss, mainly to the top folds, but none to the bottom. The original green cloth features dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own design, the iconic Mountains and Dragon. The title verso has the full printing history up to this 8th impression of 1956. Colors are bright and the white areas are soiled, with the darkening of the all areas of the spine. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the topstain faded but still evident. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1957 9th Impression in Dustjacket. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1958 10th Impression in Original Dustjacket with Custom Slipcase
London: Allen & Unwin, 1958. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1958. This book is in beautiful Near Fine condition, with beautiful bright clean and unmarked green boards. No previous owner names or any writing noted. No foxing or offsetting noted. The map endpapers are clean and bright, unmarked. The bright & clean boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with a couple of lightly bumped corners, and no fading of the bright green covers. The title verso has the full printing history up to this tenth impression of 1958. The original dustjacket is correctly marked the 10th impression, and would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. In 1957 (Ninth Impression book) Houghton Mifflin ordered a number of sheet sets to be imported from A&U for the US 1957 Ninth Printing, however after A&U had already printed the full run, HM backed out of part of the order due to import costs and reduced their order by 1,000 sheet sets. So A&U assumed they would have 1,000 more UK books than originally planned and as such they had Jackets produced for this overrun. Subsequently, HM changed their mind again and took the 1,000 sheet sets they had canceled, thus leaving A&U with 1,000 extra Ninth Impression Jackets. They simply used those extra jackets on the 1958 Tenth Impression Books. So there should be 1000 copies of the 1958 UK Tenth Impression book with a Ninth Impression Jacket, which would make this even more scarce than the 3,500 copies of the Tenth Impression books in the Tenth Impression Jackets. The dustjacket is not price clipped and in Near Fine condition, with a tiny amount of rubbing to the tips of the folds, lacking any of the normal tears to the edges. Shows a line of soiling the interior edges of the flaps. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. A custom faux leather slipcase included, featuring the JRRT Monogram to the front cover of the slipcase. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1728

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1959 US 11th Impression with Original Dustjacket and Custom Leather Slipcase
Cambridge: Houghton Mifflin, 1959. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin in 1959, from sheets printed in Great Britain. The book is in Near Fine condition, with no soiling to the covers. No previous owners names nor any other writing, offsetting or foxing noted. The boards are clean and bright, slightly darkened to the spine, one lightly bumped corner, no other markings or shelfwear noted. The color is light green cloth with blue stamping of Title to front boards. Blue stamped Title, Dwarves Hat, Author and publisher to the spine. The title verso has the full printing history up to this Eleventh impression of 1959, and the price clipped dustjacket is correctly marked as the 11th impression. The dustjacket is in Very Good Plus condition, with only almost no loss or rubbing to the edges, the top and bottom of the spine show a bit of rubbing with minor color loss in a couple of spots. The dustjacket colors are bright and unsoiled, with a tiny bit of tanning to the spine. One bump to the middle of the spine has torn thru but the closed tear shows almost no loss. A small bump to the lower front spine fold has left a 2 by 3 mm hole, small enough to be hardly noticeable. All edges of the text block are clean without any soiling for foxing marks noted. A scarce, beautiful copy, of an early American printing, with the very unusual full printing history on the title verso. A much sought after children's classic in lovely condition. Now housed in a full leather slipcase, stamped with the Mountains and Dragon to the front panel as featured on the UK books, and the Tolkien Monogram to the rear.
