The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1954 US 6th Impression with Dustjacket
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1954. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A very scarce copy of an early printing of the US Edition. The 1954 Houghton Mifflin Edition, 6th overall printing, or the 2nd printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Very Good Plus copy in Very Good Minus condition original dustjacket designed by Tolkien, as found on the original UK Editions. Stated 6th printing on front flap, not priced or clipped, with the handwritten $2.50 price, noted as printed in Great Britain. This is the only jacket that states "In Preparation" above "The Lord of the Rings" on the back flap. Only the 2nd printings of the 2nd edition have this notation. One of only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The text block is clean and bright, bound in the teal colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows very little shelf wear, slight rubbing at the folds, no soiling to note, a couple of bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink, still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. No previous owners name or writing, other than one small pen mark on page 98, marking a reading place, perhaps? The dustjacket shows a considerable amount of wear and loss to the top of the spine, and the folds at the flaps have wear and color loss. The flap folds are starting to split and have been reinforced with archival tape, as well as a few other tears to the edges. The main faults are at the top of the spine, the lower front area of the spine, and a small missing segment of the border at the top right of the front panel. The jacket shows a light amount of soiling in the white sections, and the spine is lightly tanned. Overall a wonderful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in almost any condition. A custom slipcase to house this lovely edition is provided, featuring the Mountains and Dragon design as found on the UK cover, to protect and show this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1439

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1954 US 6th Impression with Dustjacket and Custom Leather Slipcase
A Very Good Plus copy in a Very Good Plus condition original dustjacket designed by Tolkien, as found on the original UK Editions. Stated 6th printing on front flap, dustjacket is priced clipped, title page verso notes as "Printed in Great Britain", without any printing history. The text block is clean and bright, a few spots of foxing to the preliminary pages, does not affect the color frontispiece or title page, bound in the teal colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows very little shelf wear, slight rubbing at the folds, no soiling to note, the spine is darkened, but the corners are unbumped. No previous owners name or writing. The dustjacket shows a bit of loss to the spine fold corners, while the flap folds show only the most minor rubbing and slight color loss. A couple minor closed tears along the edges. The only other fault would be a bit of soiling and darkening to the light colored areas, with the spine tanned a bit more. A wonderful copy, scarce in its original dustjacket in this lovely condition. A full leather custom slipcase to house this lovely edition is provided, featuring the Mountains and Dragon design as found on the UK cover, to protect and show this classic of fantasy literature. A bit of rubbing and loss to the flap fold corners, only minor rubbing to the edges, other than the upper spine area. No previous owners names or other writing to be found. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression in Dustjacket. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket, Custom Slipcase
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1956. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket, Custom Slipcase. A Very Good Plus/Near Fine copy of an extremely scarce early Hobbit. The 1956 printing, of the 2nd Edition (1951), or the 8th printing overall (1937). This copy is a stated 8th impression from the dustjacket, published by Houghton Mifflin from sheets imported from Great Britain. Stated 8th impression on front flap, not price clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain. According to Houghton Mifflin records, one of 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, possibly to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The book features the original unpriced dustjacket with the Mountains and Dragon design by the author, with a $2.50 bookstore price stamp to the front flap. The boards show no soiling with a slight moisture ring to the front boards, the only markings, the slightest bit of rubbing to the spine fold edges, no significant shelfwear to note. The text block is clean without any writing or markings, slight toning, without foxing or offsetting, a small moisture or discoloration to a couple of pages around the title page. No bumped corners, no significant faults. The dustjacket is not price clipped, and has no markings. The front flap shows a previous fold down the middle, now straightened out and the dustjacket is now covered in an archival protector. It shows only the most minor of rubbing, with absolutely no loss of color to any of the edges or fold areas. An absolutely fabulous dustjacket. A beautiful clean copy, one of the copies with the dark reddish brown (rust) colored boards stamped in blue, that are very hard to find. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, with the red and black ink still showing clear and bright against the endpapers, a hint of browning to the gutters. Both maps have no foxing, no marks, or previous owners names. A highly collectable copy, hard to find in this beautiful Near Fine condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1589

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket, Custom Slipcase. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 UK 8th Impression in Dustjacket.
London: Allen & Unwin, 1956. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1956, this is the 8th impression. The book is in Very Good Plus condition. The covers show a bit of fading to the edges and where the white areas of the dustjacket didn't protect from fading as well. Previous owners name and 1956 date to 2nd blank page, no other names or writing noted. The dustjacket is price clipped front and rear, with the publishers new price printed to the front flap. Two months into production of the 7th Impression of the Hobbits, along with the remaining original 7th Impression dustjackets, Allen & Unwin changed the price as found on this true UK 7th impression dustjacket. The jackets were price clipped -- both front and rear flap -- by Allen & Unwin publishing company itself, with their new price of 12s.6d overprinted below the impression notation on the front flap. So this copy is one with the overprinted price of 12s 6d. A bit of foxing to the flap edges and to the white areas of the dustjacket, with the spine considerably darkened. The verso of the dustjacket also shows the darkening, but does not seem to have transferred to the book itself. Some edgewear and chips with color loss at the top of the spine, and almost none to the bottom. Tips of the flap folds show some loss, mainly to the top folds, but none to the bottom. The original green cloth features dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own design, the iconic Mountains and Dragon. The title verso has the full printing history up to this 8th impression of 1956. Colors are bright and the white areas are soiled, with the darkening of the all areas of the spine. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the topstain faded but still evident. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1613

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1957 9th Impression in Dustjacket
London: Allen & Unwin, 1957. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the 5th impression of the 2nd Edition, or 9th impression overall, published in 1957 by Allen and Unwin. Decorative map endpapers in Fine condition, bright and clean, no names or writing. Color frontispiece, mono plates, and text block all in Fine condition. The boards show no bumped corners, with the cloth clean and bright, unmarked. This copy is in its original stated 9th impression, non-price clipped dustjacket in Very Good Plus condition. The dustjacket shows minor rubbing and color loss at the folds, but only the smallest chips at the fold areas of the flaps and spine. No tears along the edges, and virtually no loss to the top and bottom of the spine. The dustjacket is lightly soiled with a bit of tanning to the spine, showing some foxing in the white portions of the front and back panels. The rear of the dustjacket shows some writing in blue pencil, along with an address sticker to the front upper corner of the first blank page. Pages are clean and bright, no tears or stains, no foxing or offsetting. A beautiful collectable copy. Scarce in this wonderful condition. A custom faux leather clamshell, stamped with Tolkien's JRRT monogram, is provided to protect and show this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1957 9th Impression in Dustjacket. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1958 10th Impression in Original Dustjacket with Custom Slipcase
London: Allen & Unwin, 1958. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1958. This book is in beautiful Near Fine condition, with beautiful bright clean and unmarked green boards. No previous owner names or any writing noted. No foxing or offsetting noted. The map endpapers are clean and bright, unmarked. The bright & clean boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with a couple of lightly bumped corners, and no fading of the bright green covers. The title verso has the full printing history up to this tenth impression of 1958. The original dustjacket is correctly marked the 10th impression, and would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. In 1957 (Ninth Impression book) Houghton Mifflin ordered a number of sheet sets to be imported from A&U for the US 1957 Ninth Printing, however after A&U had already printed the full run, HM backed out of part of the order due to import costs and reduced their order by 1,000 sheet sets. So A&U assumed they would have 1,000 more UK books than originally planned and as such they had Jackets produced for this overrun. Subsequently, HM changed their mind again and took the 1,000 sheet sets they had canceled, thus leaving A&U with 1,000 extra Ninth Impression Jackets. They simply used those extra jackets on the 1958 Tenth Impression Books. So there should be 1000 copies of the 1958 UK Tenth Impression book with a Ninth Impression Jacket, which would make this even more scarce than the 3,500 copies of the Tenth Impression books in the Tenth Impression Jackets. The dustjacket is not price clipped and in Near Fine condition, with a tiny amount of rubbing to the tips of the folds, lacking any of the normal tears to the edges. Shows a line of soiling the interior edges of the flaps. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. A custom faux leather slipcase included, featuring the JRRT Monogram to the front cover of the slipcase. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1959 US 11th Impression with Original Dustjacket and Custom Leather Slipcase
Cambridge: Houghton Mifflin, 1959. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin in 1959, from sheets printed in Great Britain. The book is in Near Fine condition, with no soiling to the covers. No previous owners names nor any other writing, offsetting or foxing noted. The boards are clean and bright, slightly darkened to the spine, one lightly bumped corner, no other markings or shelfwear noted. The color is light green cloth with blue stamping of Title to front boards. Blue stamped Title, Dwarves Hat, Author and publisher to the spine. The title verso has the full printing history up to this Eleventh impression of 1959, and the price clipped dustjacket is correctly marked as the 11th impression. The dustjacket is in Very Good Plus condition, with only almost no loss or rubbing to the edges, the top and bottom of the spine show a bit of rubbing with minor color loss in a couple of spots. The dustjacket colors are bright and unsoiled, with a tiny bit of tanning to the spine. One bump to the middle of the spine has torn thru but the closed tear shows almost no loss. A small bump to the lower front spine fold has left a 2 by 3 mm hole, small enough to be hardly noticeable. All edges of the text block are clean without any soiling for foxing marks noted. A scarce, beautiful copy, of an early American printing, with the very unusual full printing history on the title verso. A much sought after children's classic in lovely condition. Now housed in a full leather slipcase, stamped with the Mountains and Dragon to the front panel as featured on the UK books, and the Tolkien Monogram to the rear. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 2nd Impression UK 1st Edition, with Clamshell Case.
London: Allen & Unwin, 1937. J.R.R. Tolkien. First Edition. Original Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Hobbit or There and Back Again. Published by Allen & Unwin, a UK 1st Edition, 2nd impression was published in 1937, the same year as the original 1st impression. The exterior of this copy is moderately soiled, whereas the interior is clean and bright, with only scattered spots of foxing or minor spots & fingerprints. Decorative map endpapers are in excellent condition, clean, with some darkening to the free endpaper side, a small previous owners name on the first blank page. Has the 4 color and 9 mono plates, with the Smaug illustration showing signs of having been loose and glued back in. The edges of the Smaug illustration are rough, and the gutter is yellowed from the glue, a small tear to the bottom mounting edge, but none of this intrudes on the color illustration, with the other illustrations clean and bright with no tears or faults. This second impression is important for the addition of the 4 color illustrations by the author. This is the 1st, and only early UK Edition that was published with the four Tolkien color illustrations. One of only 1877 copies of the original 2300 that survived the bombing of London in November 1940. This well loved copy shows soiling to the covers, some loss to the cloth at the top and the bottom of the spine, along with a slight spine lean. The exterior also has minor bumps to a couple of the corners, along with some shelfwear to the edges, but in very good condition overall. The text block is clean and bright, binding still tight. Features Tolkien's orignal 'Mountains and Dragon' design stamped in blue on the boards and spine. A beautiful copy, furnished with a facsimile of the original 2nd impression UK Dustjacket. This copy is housed in a beautiful Quarter Leather and Marbled Paper Clamshell Case with a gilt stamped Leather Spine. A beautiful presentation to house and protect this highly collectable copy of this timeless classic. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, including both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1900
