No Names or writing, no foxing, pages clean and bright. Pictorial Cover, as issued, is in Near Fine condition, with some minor rubbing to the fold area's. Top and bottom of the spine is lightly rubbed with minor color loss. Not faded or soiled, with nice clean bright colors to the Pauline Baynes illustrations. Ancrene Wisse, 1962 1st Printing with Scarce Dustjacket
London: Oxford University Press, 1962. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This is the 1962 First Printing of Ancrene Wisse, the English text of the Ancrene Riwle, see Hammond B25, edited by and containing a prefatory note by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by the Oxford University Press for The Early English Text Society, the number of copies was limited to 3000. The book is in Near Fine condition, with the spine very slightly knocked. No previous owners names or any writing noted in the book. There is a couple of tape ghosts on the front free endpaper, very likely from an early dustjacket protector which protected the fragile glassine dustjacket very well. The dustjacket is only lightly soiled and has some very minor chipping at the fold areas, and a small closed tear at the spine head on the back corner. Very uncommon to find a copy, let alone one with the scarce glassine dustjacket, particularly in this lovely condition. A removable protective holder has been added to protect it in the future. First published by Allen & Unwin in 1911, with this being the Third Impression of 1950. The book is in Near Fine condition, with no marks or writing in it. Small booksellers label, Blackwells Oxford England, also has a previous owners bookplate to the front endpaper, hidden under the dustjacket flap. The dustjacket is price clipped. A bit of scattered foxing to the outer edges, none to the textblock itself, still very clean and bright. The covers are very clean and bright, having been protected by the original dustjacket. The light dustjacket has a bit of a shadow to the front panel, with a few minor chips to the edges, mainly at the spine and flap folds. The spine is lightly tanned, but the brown lettering is still bright and legible. Some minor rubbing and loss to the tips of the spine and fold areas. Orange topstain still visible, a bit dusty. First published by Allen & Unwin in 1911, with this being the Fourth Impression of 1954. The last printed page is a full page advertisement for books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Lists The Hobbit, 2nd Edition 5th Impression, Farmer Giles of Ham, and The Lord of the Rings "about 25s. net per vol" "In Three Parts: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King". This must be one of the first books to advertise The Lord of the Rings, and they had not set the final price yet. The book is in Near Fine condition, with a few ink and pencil marks along with annotations in it. A pair of previous owners names neatly to the front endpaper. The dustjacket is price clipped, and has a "Distributed by MacMillan" label on the front lower edge. No foxing to the endpapers or edges, none to the textblock itself, still very clean and bright. The covers are very clean and bright, having been protected by the original dustjacket. The green dustjacket has a bit of browning to the edges and spine, but with no wear or chips to the edges, spine, or flap folds. The spine is lightly tanned, but the brown lettering is still bright and legible. No topstain, top edges a bit dusty. A wonderful copy for the Tolkien completist, scarce in this lovely condition. Farmer Giles of Ham, The Rise and Wonderful Adventures of Farmer Giles, Lord of Tame, Count of Worminghall and King of the Little Kingdom, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is his second major published work, preceded only by the Hobbit. Published in 1949, this is the 1st impression of the 1st Edition, published by Allen & Unwin. A Near Fine book, a tiny bit of soiling to the top of the front boards, top edge slightly sunned with the topstain faded a bit. The original dustjacket (unclipped) in Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition with a small tear now reinforced to the verso with archival tape, shows tape residue from previous repair. A small closed tear, to the bottom of the rear panel of the dustjacket near the spine, virtually invisible. A light stain to the top of the back panel near the spine. Textblock is clean and tight, with a couple of spots of foxing to the first and last pages hardly noticeable, but no offsetting to the endpapers. Dustjacket shows some light sunning to the spine, and is not price clipped. Tiny amount loss to the edges at the folds and top of the spine, virtually no rubbing. No names or writing, clean and bright. Two color plates by Pauline Baynes, as well as being illustrated on almost every page with her line drawings. This is his second major published work, preceded only by the Hobbit. Published in 1949, this is the 1st Large Print Edition published by Cedric Chivers Ltd, in it's original dustjacket. A Fine book, with no soiling, no previous owners names or any other markings. The original dustjacket is not priceclipped and in Fine condition, having been removed from an early archival protector, which has done an outstanding job of preserving the dustjacket in it's original As New condition. The textblock is clean and bright, without fault. No foxing or offsetting, with the trimmed edges clean and bright as well. No previous owner names or writing noted. There are no color plates in this edition, having the original color plates reproduced in black and white. All illustrations by Pauline Baynes are present, as in the original, on almost every page. Farmer Giles of Ham, The Rise and Wonderful Adventures of Farmer Giles, Lord of Tame, Count of Worminghall and King of the Little Kingdom, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is his second major published work, preceded by the Hobbit. Originally published in 1949, this is the 3rd impression of the 1st Edition, published by Allen & Unwin in 1961. A Near Fine book, with dustjacket (stated 4th impression) in Near Fine condition as well. Textblock is clean and tight, without any foxing. Dustjacket shows some sunning to the spine, and is not price clipped. Minor loss to the edges, mostly at the folds. No names or writing, clean and bright. Two color plates by Pauline Baynes, as well as being illustrated on almost every page with her line drawings. Highly collectable, this is a very nice copy for any Tolkien fans collection.
