The Hobbit, an Illustrated Edition, with Clear Dustjacket, Rankin Bass Deluxe Edition,
New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc, 1977. Arthur Rankin, Jr. And Jules Bass. First Thus. Hard Cover. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the first fully illustrated Deluxe Edition with the original text of the classic. The illustrations and cinematic sequence drawings are based on the animated film by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass. The book shows almost no rubbing to the corners of the illustrated covers, but does have one minor split in the middle of the back panel, not at an edge. The dustjacket shows the most minor rubbing and very little color loss. The binding is still square, tight and strong, no splitting to the endpapers as is common. The dustjacket is of clear mylar with a colorful illustration of Smaug swooping down on the Dwarves and Bilbo on the front boards, and Smaug resting on his mound of treasure on the rear boards. The mylar dustjacket has no tears, only the one split approx. 1" long that does not approach the edge where it might split further. Very unusual for one to have survived this well after almost 40 years. No marks or writing, names or inscriptions noted. The book is in Near Fine condition, with over 230 full color illustrations. This full fledged picture book version, contains the full text of The Hobbit, and will be loved by young and old alike. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
London: Houghton Mifflin, 1997. Alan Lee. Hard Cover. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the 1st impression of the 1997 edition published by Houghton Mifflin. The book and dustjacket are both in Near Fine condition, a minor bump to the top of the spine and a 2nd to the upper rear corner has wrinkled the edge of the dustwrapper, but doesn't appear to have damaged the cloth covered boards. No names or writing in the book. No tears, chipping or rubs to the priced dustjacket. Now covered with a clear mylar dustjacket protector. This book is the 1997 Alan Lee illustrated edition of the Hobbit, which commemorates the 60th anniversary of the publication of the Hobbit. The dustjacket features two of his works, accented by a gold border on the top and bottom edge that features Tolkiens runic script. A lovely copy for the collector, these images eventually defined the look and feel of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Ring trilogy along with the more recent Hobbit productions. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
London: The Childrens Book Club, 1942. J.R.R. Tolkien. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings, Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. One of 3000 copies of the 1942, 1st Edition 3rd impression, printed for the Children's Book Club of the bookseller Foyles, from the Allen & Unwin plates. Bound in yellow, gilt-stamped cloth over boards, with a dust-jacket (which Tolkien thought hideous) in orange and white, featuring a cartoon of a dandified hobbit smoking a pipe. Tolkien commented, "Surely the paper wasted on that hideous dust-cover could have been better used." A scarce and desirable copy for the collector. The book is in Very Good condition. The boards were a bright yellow, but now have some discoloration to the edges of boards and the spine. The gilt on the spine is still legible with tarnishing and discoloration to the yellow cloth covering. Minimal bumping or warping to the very thin boards as issued, one more noticeable warp or bump to the upper edge of the rear board, with a couple of lower corners bumped. No fraying and only minor wear to the edges. No previous owners names or writing noted in the book. No foxing or offsetting to any of the pages, all relatively bright and clean. Features the "Book Production War Economy Standards" title verso, 'This Edition published 1942 by arrangement with George Allen & Unwin'. The dustjacket is a facsimile, provided to help protect this scarce issue. A very hard to find original issue of a very scarce book, housed in a Custom Clamshell Case that reflects the original dustjacket spine, with the boards covered in a lovely marbled paper featuring the bright orange of the dustjacket, to protect and show this very scarce book. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1946 1st Edition in Dust Jacket, with Custom Clamshell Case.
London: Allen & Unwin, 1946. J.R.R. Tolkien. First Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Fourth impression published 1946, the final publication of the 1st Edition. An exquisite copy, showing no foxing to the maps or pages. The decorative map endpapers are clean & bright in Fine condition. Two neat previous owner's names, one to front pastedown (map) hidden by the dustjack flap, and another to the front free endpaper (map), no other writing or marks noted. Color frontispiece, 8 mono plates, and text block all in Near Fine condition, one small singe mark to the edge of the textblock, did not burn into the paper. The slightest bit of spine lean, with a bit of rubbing and shelfwear to the bottom edges of the boards, corners lightly bumped. A bright and beautiful well protected copy, very unusual for these early 1st Editions to survive in this condition. Produced in conformity with the war time standard's, with the distinctive 'War Time Economy Standards' title verso. This copy has its original price clipped dustjacket, which has had restoration and conservation work performed. It was originally missing the bottom 1" of the spine and upper flap fold areas, and had numerous splits to the flap and spine fold areas, which have been infilled, strengthened and repainted as necessary. Makes a beautiful presentation of this wonderful book. The dustjacket is in an archival protector, to help preserve this restored and repaired original dustjacket. Pages are clean and bright, no tears or stains. Still shows a bit of the green topstain, a little faded and dusty. A bit of shelf wear to the edges of the lower boards, very lightly bumped corners. The original decorative green cloth, is unsoiled without any fading to the spine area. A beautiful collectable copy. Uncommon in this beautiful condition. A Very Good Plus copy in Very Good Minus condition original dustjacket designed by Tolkien, as found on the original UK Editions. Stated 6th printing on front flap, not priced or clipped, with the handwritten $2.50 price, noted as printed in Great Britain. This is the only jacket that states "In Preparation" above "The Lord of the Rings" on the back flap. Only the 2nd printings of the 2nd edition have this notation. One of only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The text block is clean and bright, bound in the teal colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows very little shelf wear, slight rubbing at the folds, no soiling to note, a couple of bumped corners. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink, still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. No previous owners name or writing, other than one small pen mark on page 98, marking a reading place, perhaps? The dustjacket shows a considerable amount of wear and loss to the top of the spine, and the folds at the flaps have wear and color loss. The flap folds are starting to split and have been reinforced with archival tape, as well as a few other tears to the edges. The main faults are at the top of the spine, the lower front area of the spine, and a small missing segment of the border at the top right of the front panel. The jacket shows a light amount of soiling in the white sections, and the spine is lightly tanned. Overall a wonderful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in almost any condition. A custom slipcase to house this lovely edition is provided, featuring the Mountains and Dragon design as found on the UK cover, to protect and show this classic of fantasy literature. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1955 7th Impression in Dustjacket, with Custom Leather Slipcase. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1955 UK 7th Impression in Custom Leather Slipcase
London: Allen & Unwin, 1955. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1955. The book is in Near Fine condition. The covers show a bit of fading to the edges and where the white areas of the dustjacket didn't protect from fading as well. Previous owners name and "April 1956" date in pencil to first free blank page. Small "Parkers of Oxford" sticker to margin of front map. The dustjacket is not price clipped, with the publishers original price of "9s, 6d. net" to the front and rear flap. Two months into production of the 7th Impression of the Hobbit, along with the remaining original 7th Impression dustjackets, Allen & Unwin changed the price as found on the UK 7th impression dustjacket. At about the same time they asked for the 8th impression dustjackets to be price clipped and reprinted with the new price of "12s. 6d. net" as well. It appears that there are numerous instances involving both the 7th and 8th printings, where some of the dustjackets were not repriced, and it also appears that some of these may have been placed on the incorrect impression of the books. The jackets were price clipped -- both front and rear flap -- by Allen & Unwin publishing company itself, with their new price of 12s.6d overprinted below the impression notation on the front flap. So this copy is one of the few found with the original price of 9s 6., even with the later dustjacket which appears to be original to this copy. A bit of tanning to the flap edges and to the white areas of the dustjacket, slightly more so to the spine. Some light edgewear and minor chips with color loss at the top of the spine, and a smaller amount to the bottom. Tips of the flap folds show some rubbing and loss, mainly to the top folds. The top back of the spine fold area has a 1/2 inch closed tear with a bit of creasing and subsequent color loss to the edges. The original green cloth features dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own design, the iconic Mountains and Dragon. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression in Dustjacket. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1956. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A Near Fine copy of an extremely scarce early Hobbit. The 1956 printing, of the 2nd Edition (1951), or the 8th printing overall (1937). This copy is a stated 8th impression from the dustjacket, published by Houghton Mifflin from sheets imported from Great Britain. Stated 8th impression on front flap, not price clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain. One of probably only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The book features the original dustjacket with the Mountains and Dragon design by the author. The dustjackets has a couple of closed tears, one to the upper front panel and another to the upper rear panel, no loss noted. A bit of rubbing and wear to the top of the spine, some minor color loss at the flap folds. The boards show no soiling or marking, no shelfwear to note. The text block is clean, without foxing, a previous owners name to the front pastedown, hidden by the dustjacket flap. No other markings, no bumped corners, clean boards, virtually without fault. The dustjacket is not price clipped, and has no markings. A beautiful clean copy, one of the copies with the dark reddish brown boards stamped in blue, that are very hard to find. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, with the red and black ink still showing clear and bright against the endpapers. Both maps have no foxing, no marks, or previous owners names. A highly collectable copy, hard to find in this Near Fine condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1327

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket, Custom Slipcase
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1956. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket, Custom Slipcase. A Very Good Plus/Near Fine copy of an extremely scarce early Hobbit. According to Houghton Mifflin records, one of 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, possibly to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The book features the original unpriced dustjacket with the Mountains and Dragon design by the author, with a $2.50 bookstore price stamp to the front flap. The boards show no soiling with a slight moisture ring to the front boards, the only markings, the slightest bit of rubbing to the spine fold edges, no significant shelfwear to note. The text block is clean without any writing or markings, slight toning, without foxing or offsetting, a small moisture or discoloration to a couple of pages around the title page. No bumped corners, no significant faults. The dustjacket is not price clipped, and has no markings. The front flap shows a previous fold down the middle, now straightened out and the dustjacket is now covered in an archival protector. It shows only the most minor of rubbing, with absolutely no loss of color to any of the edges or fold areas. An absolutely fabulous dustjacket. A beautiful clean copy, one of the copies with the dark reddish brown (rust) colored boards stamped in blue, that are very hard to find. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, with the red and black ink still showing clear and bright against the endpapers, a hint of browning to the gutters. Both maps have no foxing, no marks, or previous owners names. A highly collectable copy, hard to find in this beautiful Near Fine condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket, Custom Slipcase. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 UK 8th Impression in Dustjacket.
London: Allen & Unwin, 1956. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1956. The book is in Very Good Plus condition. The covers show a bit of fading to the edges and where the white areas of the dustjacket didn't protect from fading as well. Previous owners name and 1956 date to 2nd blank page, no other names or writing noted. The dustjacket is price clipped front and rear, with the publishers new price printed to the front flap. Two months into production of the 7th Impression of the Hobbits, along with the remaining original 7th Impression dustjackets, Allen & Unwin changed the price as found on this true UK 7th impression dustjacket. The jackets were price clipped -- both front and rear flap -- by Allen & Unwin publishing company itself, with their new price of 12s.6d overprinted below the impression notation on the front flap. So this copy is one with the overprinted price of 12s 6d. A bit of foxing to the flap edges and to the white areas of the dustjacket, with the spine considerably darkened. The verso of the dustjacket also shows the darkening, but does not seem to have transferred to the book itself. Some edgewear and chips with color loss at the top of the spine, and almost none to the bottom. Tips of the flap folds show some loss, mainly to the top folds, but none to the bottom. The original green cloth features dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own design, the iconic Mountains and Dragon. The title verso has the full printing history up to this 8th impression of 1956. Colors are bright and the white areas are soiled, with the darkening of the all areas of the spine. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the topstain faded but still evident. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1613

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1957 9th Impression in Dustjacket. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1958 10th Impression in Original Dustjacket with Custom Slipcase
London: Allen & Unwin, 1958. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1958. This book is in beautiful Near Fine condition, with beautiful bright clean and unmarked green boards. No previous owner names or any writing noted. No foxing or offsetting noted. The map endpapers are clean and bright, unmarked. The bright & clean boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with a couple of lightly bumped corners, and no fading of the bright green covers. The title verso has the full printing history up to this tenth impression of 1958. The original dustjacket is correctly marked the 10th impression, and would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. In 1957 (Ninth Impression book) Houghton Mifflin ordered a number of sheet sets to be imported from A&U for the US 1957 Ninth Printing, however after A&U had already printed the full run, HM backed out of part of the order due to import costs and reduced their order by 1,000 sheet sets. So A&U assumed they would have 1,000 more UK books than originally planned and as such they had Jackets produced for this overrun. Subsequently, HM changed their mind again and took the 1,000 sheet sets they had canceled, thus leaving A&U with 1,000 extra Ninth Impression Jackets. They simply used those extra jackets on the 1958 Tenth Impression Books. So there should be 1000 copies of the 1958 UK Tenth Impression book with a Ninth Impression Jacket, which would make this even more scarce than the 3,500 copies of the Tenth Impression books in the Tenth Impression Jackets. The dustjacket is not price clipped and in Near Fine condition, with a tiny amount of rubbing to the tips of the folds, lacking any of the normal tears to the edges. Shows a line of soiling the interior edges of the flaps. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. A custom faux leather slipcase included, featuring the JRRT Monogram to the front cover of the slipcase. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1728
