Beren and Luthien, Signed By Alan Lee, with Custom Leather Slipcase
London: Harper Collins, 2017. Alan Lee. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Beren and Luthien, by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by Harper Collins in 2017. The First Edition, 1st impression of the newest release from the myths and legends of Middle-Earth, as conceived by the author. The tale of Beren and Luthien was written after the authors return from the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The story grew and changed over the years, with the developing of Middle-earth and it's intertwined history and associations. The love between Beren, a mortal man and Luthien, an immortal elf, was opposed by her father. Setting Beren on an impossible task before he may wed Luthien, he must rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, of a Silmaril. Christopher Tolkien shows us the story, from its initial conception, thru the changing aspects found in the authors later verse and prose. The story is brought to life with nine full color illustrations along with numerous line drawings by the illustrator, Alan Lee who has also signed this copy on the Title page. Housed in a full black leather slipcase, featuring a Luthien Tinuviel device to the front panel, and the JRRT monogram to the rear. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. The Review of English Studies Vol. 1 - No. 3, July 1925, The Devil's Coach-Horses, with Custom Clamshell Case
London: Sidgwick & Jackson, LTD. 1925. First Thus. Original Wraps. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Review of English Studies, A Quarterly Journal of English Literature and the English Language. Edited by R. B. McKerrow, Litt.D. Vol. 1.-No. 3. July 1925 The Devils Coach-Horses By J.R.R. Tolkien. From Wikipedia, The Devil's Coach Horses is a 1925 essay by J. R. R. Tolkien ("Devil's coach-horse" is a British expression for a particular kind of rove beetle). Tolkien draws attention to the devil's steeds called eaueres in Hali Meidhad, translated "boar" in the Early English Text Society edition of 1922, but in reference to the jumenta "yoked team, draught horse" of Joel (Joel 1:17), in the Vulgata Clementina computruerunt jumenta in stercore suo, (the Nova Vulgata has semina for Hebrew ???? "grain"). Rather than from the Old English word for "boar", eofor (German Eber) Tolkien derives the word from eafor "packhorse", from a verb aferian "transport", related to Middle English aver "draught-horse", a word surviving in northern dialects. The Proto-Germanic root *ab- "energy, vigour, labour" of the word is cognate to Latin opus. This lovely volume is very well preserved in Very Good Plus condition, showing some edgewear consisting of a minor chip with some loss, a couple of closed tears, and folding along the bottom edges of the original wrappers. The text block shows very little browning to the pages, no foxing, no names or markings, nice and clean. The uncut edges are uniform at the top, with some outsized pages on the side, while the bottom is quite uneven in regards to page length. Minor curvature to the spine, with very minor loss to the bottom fold area. A very scarce piece in rare condition, now housed in a custom Italian cloth clamshell cases with title and author gilt stamped to the spine, the JRRT monogram to the front and rear boards. An exceptional opportunity to add this splendid volume to any Tolkien Collection. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
