Beren and Luthien, Signed By Alan Lee, with Custom Leather Slipcase
London: Harper Collins, 2017. Alan Lee. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Beren and Luthien, by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by Harper Collins in 2017. The First Edition, 1st impression of the newest release from the myths and legends of Middle-Earth, as conceived by the author. The tale of Beren and Luthien was written after the authors return from the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The story grew and changed over the years, with the developing of Middle-earth and it's intertwined history and associations. The love between Beren, a mortal man and Luthien, an immortal elf, was opposed by her father. Setting Beren on an impossible task before he may wed Luthien, he must rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, of a Silmaril. Christopher Tolkien shows us the story, from its initial conception, thru the changing aspects found in the authors later verse and prose. The story is brought to life with nine full color illustrations along with numerous line drawings by the illustrator, Alan Lee who has also signed this copy on the Title page. Housed in a full black leather slipcase, featuring a Luthien Tinuviel device to the front panel, and the JRRT monogram to the rear. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Finn and Hengest, The Fragment and the Episode
U.S.A. Houghton Mifflin, 1983. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Finn and Hengest, The Fragment and the Episode, by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Alan Bliss. Published by Houghton Mifflin in 1983, this is the First American Edition, 1st Impression. From the blurb, Tolkien's 'most significant contribution to Anglo-Saxon studies is to be found in his lectures on the story of Finn and Hengest, two fifth-century heroes in northern Europe. The story is told in two Old English poems, Beowulf and The Fight at Finnesburg, but told so obscurely and allusively that its interpretation has been a matter of controversy for more than a hundred years. As elucidated by Tolkien the story is a classic tragedy of divided loyalties, of vengeance, blood and death; it had the added interest that the Hengest who plays the leading role in it was very probably the Hengest who led the first Germanic invasion of Britain, and that the events it describes immediately preceded that first invasion.' 'It was Professor Tolkien's own wish that the preparation for publication of his work on Finn and Hengest should be undertaken by Alan Bliss, who studied under him from 1946 to 1948. From three separate sets of lecture notes, ranging in date from before 1930 to after 1960 Professor Bliss has pieced together a coherent statement of Tolkien's latest views expressed entirely in his own words.' The book and dustjacket are both in Near Fine condition, no names, marks, or writing noted. No foxing or offsetting, with the text block clean and bright. The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition, with Full Page Sketch of Grani
London: Harper Collins, 2009. Bill Sanderson. De Luxe Edition. Full-Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, The number 288 of 500 of the UK Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition, published by Harper Collins in 2009, the first publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien. Copy number 288, edited and signed by his son, Christopher Tolkien, to the Limitation Notice, and has a full page drawing of Grani to the Half Title Page, signed and dated by the Illustrator, Bill Sanderson 5th of May, 2009. The story tells the epic story of the Norse hero Sigurd the dragon slayer, the revenge of his wife, Gudrun, and the Fall of the Niflungs. From the publisher's release statement, "Many years ago, J.R.R. Tolkien composed his own version, now published for the first time, of the great legend of Northern antiquity, in two closely related poems to which he gave the titles The New Lay of the Volsungs and The New Lay of Gudrun. In the Lay of the Volsungs is told the ancestry of the great hero Sigurd, the slayer of Fafnir most celebrated of dragons, whose treasure he took for his own; of his awakening of the Valkyrie Brynhild who slept surrounded by a wall of fire, and of their betrothal; and of his coming to the court of the great princes who were named the Niflungs (or Nibelungs), with whom he entered into blood-brotherhood. In that court there sprang great love but also great hate, brought about by the power of the enchantress, mother of the Niflungs, skilled in the arts of magic, of shape-changing and potions of forgetfulness. In scenes of dramatic intensity, of confusion of identity, thwarted passion, jealousy and bitter strife, the tragedy of Sigurd and Brynhild, of Gunnar the Niflung and Gudrun his sister, mounts to its end in the murder of Sigurd at the hands of his blood-brothers, the suicide of Brynhild, and the despair of Gudrun. In the Lay of Gudrun her fate after the death of Sigurd is told, her marriage against her will to the mighty Atli, ruler of the Huns (the Attila of history), his murder of her brothers the Niflung lords, and her hideous revenge. Deriving his version primarily from his close study of the ancient poetry of Norway and Iceland known as the Poetic Edda (and where no old poetry exists, from the later prose work the Volsunga Saga), J.R.R. Tolkien employed a verse-form of short stanzas whose lines embody in English the exacting alliterative rhythms and the concentrated energy of the poems of the Edda." -- Christopher Tolkien. Features a color frontispiece of a facsimile page from J.R.R. Tolkien's original manuscript. Fully bound in Brown Leather with matching full leather clamshell case, stamped in gold foil with a unique motif of Sigurd's horse, Grani. Printed on superior quality paper and including a silk ribbon marker sewn into the textblock. Matches the recently released UK Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition of The Children of Hurin. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
