This is his second major published work, preceded only by the Hobbit. Published in 1950, printed in Great Britain, this is the 1st impression of the 1st US Edition, published by Houghton Mifflin. A Near fine book, illustrated by Pauline Diane Baynes, the exterior boards as well as the textblock are clean & bright, unmarked. This was her first commission for Tolkien, who famously said of her Farmer Giles work, that it had "reduced {his} text to a commentary on her drawings". The Near Fine book has a tight binding, with no names or writing, no foxing or offsetting noted. The lovely dustjacket is in Very Good condition, showing some fading to the spine along with a little edgewear and a couple of fairly large chips missing to the lower edge of the front and rear panel. The blue and orange colors are bright and clean with some fading to the spine. Textblock is clean and tight, without any foxing, no names or writing. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1956, this is the 8th impression. The book is in Very Good Plus condition, with a bit of browning to the edges of the green cloth from light exposure. The rest of covers are clean with a couple of light spots around the dragon on the front cover. A neat previous owners name to the front free endpaper (map), the only markings in the book. A few scattered foxing spots to the flaps of the dustjacket. The dustjacket is price clipped front and rear, with the publishers new price printed to the front flap. Two months into production of the 8th Impression of the Hobbits, along with the remaining original 7th Impression dustjackets, Allen & Unwin changed the price as found on this true UK 8th impression dustjacket. The 7th and 8th jackets were price clipped -- both front and rear flap -- by the Allen & Unwin publishing company itself, with their new price of 12s.6d overprinted below the impression notation on the front flap. So this copy is one with the overprinted price of 12s 6d. A bit of soiling and a few small foxing marks to the flaps, with the spine slightly darkened. The spine and flap folds show considerable rubbing and color loss. The dustjacket also shows some darkening, as well as some loss to the flap folds and spine fold areas, the largest to the bottom of the spine with a closed tear top and bottom of the spine fold area. The dustjacket shows some edgewear with minor color loss, mostly to the spine fold areas. Tips of the flap folds show some minor loss. The original green cloth features dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own design, the iconic Mountains and Dragon. The title verso has the full printing history up to this 8th impression of 1956. Colors are bright and the white areas are only lightly soiled, with minor tanning of the spine. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the topstain faded but barely visible. This is a 2nd Edition, Fifteenth impression overall, published in 1965, in its original and correct non-price clipped Fifteenth impression dustjacket. The book is in Near Fine condition. The only faults are a slight bit of fading to the edges of the boards, and a little to the spine edges. No offsetting or foxing present on the maps or in the textblock, all clean and bright. No previous owner's name nor any other markings noted. The dustjacket is only lightly tanned to the spine, with the white sections clean and bright on the front and rear panels. Only the tiniest bit of edgewear and some color loss at the tips of the flap folds. The Near Fine dustjacket presents beautifully. The books cover is clean, bright, and unblemished, except for the minor fading to the edges. No bumps to the corners of the boards, no pushing to the spine ends, no wear or fraying whatsoever. An early collectable copy that shows beautifully with the matching Near Fine dustjacket. A beautiful, Near Fine 1st impression set of the second style of binding issued by the Folio Society in 1990. They are illustrated by Ingahild Grathmer and redrawn by Eric Fraser. Printed in Great Britain, set in Barbou with Libra Display type, bound in full "Elephant-Hide" at the Bath Press in Avon. This binding features the "Seven (Silver) Rings for the Dwarf-lords", within "Three (Gold) Rings for the Elven-kings", surrounded by "Nine (Red) Rings for Mortal Men", encompassed by the "One Ring" (Gold) "to rule them all". Wonderful symbology, and beautiful execution to form the gilt design for the front boards of each book. Topstain in a dark 'blood red' color. This set of books shows no faults, bright, clean and tight. Housed in the original publishers slipcase that is in Near Fine condition with some light general rubbing and a small smudge (paint?) to one lower corner. This copy is what was originally defined as the 1st State with the signature mark 4 as well as the slipped type on page 49. From correspondence with Wayne Hammond who has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Descriptive Bibliography, making this the later or 2nd state. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, no tears or extra folds. An extraordinary set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is fully rebound in Black Morocco Leather with Red Leather insets with the Title and Author gilt stamped. The individual books feature the White Tree of Gondor on the front boards, with the JRRT Monogram to the rear boards, single gilt rule to the inside and outside edges. The set is further characterized by custom hand Marbled endpapers, by Joan Ajala of Australia, all edges trimmed and gilded, and is housed in a custom black cloth and leather entry case to protect and show these beautiful books. These are distinguished by compartments, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and gilt ruled edges. Title, Author, Publisher and Date, as well as a 'Ring and Eye' device from the original UK dustjackets are featured in the compartments, with the White Tree of Gondor featured on the front boards of the books. A beautiful design, executed by the Chelsea Bindery. All are very clean and bright with no foxing to any pages, and with no writing or signatures. Fantastic looking set, with a classic design. An exceptionally brilliant and scarce set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is all original cloth with the correct original dustjackets. The dustjackets are all in Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition, with none being price clipped. The Fellowship has a small chip and closed tear with loss to the top of the spine fold area. The color is bright and exceptional, without fading or tanning. The other two dustjackets are also colorful and very bright, with minor rubbing to the fold areas, minor color loss, and only the smallest of chips, showing the slightest tanning to The Two Towers spine. This set is very scarce, with the variant Slate Blue/Grey Binding on the Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers, the only books and/or impressions that have this variant binding from the publisher. The three books do not have any previous owners names nor any other writing noted. The Two Towers shows a split down the gutter, now neatly repaired. The Return of the King, is a 1st impression, and the dustjacket exhibits the 1st state points with the oversized $5.00 price and double strokes to the dollar sign. The dustjacket is in remarkable clean condition, with a little light soiling to the white areas on the back panel. Original maps are present in all three volumes, with a minor repair to a tear at the mounting fold of The Fellowship, showing an extra fold along the upper mounting edge, now straightened. The Mordor Map in the Return of the King shows a little wrinkling from a damp stain along the mounting edge. The set is housed in a custom Red Leather Slipcase, featuring Tolkien's Ring & Eye device and the White Tree of Gondor to the side panels, along with Tolkien's JRRT monogram to the rear panel, all stamped in gold with a ribbon pull to easily access the books.
