Four (4) LP Record Albums, J.R.R. Tolkien Reads and Sings His The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion of Beren & Luthien, and Poems and Songs of Middle Earth.
New York: Caedmon Records, 1975. Pauline Baynes. First Thus. Pictorial Cover. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. A marvelous set of the 4 LP Albums released by Caedmon Records that feature J.R.R. Tolkien reading and singing his works from The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, and Poems and Songs of Middle Earth. All four albums and covers are in Very Good Plus condition, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings albums no longer have the shrinkwrap on them. The Silmarillion and Poems & Songs are still sealed in the original shrinkwrap. The two opened records are in very good condition, with a bit of age toning to the record sleeves, I was able to play them to verify their condition. The album covers are all in Very Good Plus to Near Fine condition, as the shrinkwrap has protected very well over the years. A minor bit of edge wear along the open edge. A very collectable example of these wonderful albums, allowing you to hear the voice of the author of the classics from Middle-Earth. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1736

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Four Paperback Book Boxset from 1977, Still Sealed in Shrinkwrap.
New York: Ballantine Books, 1977. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Mass Market Paperback. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A four volume paperback set housed in the Publishers original Gold Foil covered slipcase, featuring the Heraldic symbols that were drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien. These illustrations include the ones designed to represent Feanor, Idril Celebrindal, Earendil, Luthien Tinuviel, Fingolfin, Elwe, Luthien Tinuviel and Finwe. This is one of the few published sets that includes all four books, The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. This is also the first set to feature the illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien, as the covers of the book and slipcase, rather then the Barbara Remington designs as found on previous issues. As this set is still sealed it is not possible to tell the exact printing or publishing date, however the exterior of the case does note the Heraldry designs are copyright of George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1973. Also the numbers on the spines of the books match up with another set that all were issued in November of 1977. Hammond and Anderson's, A Descriptive Bibliography notes that "after the 40th (March 1973) and no later than the forty-second (September 1973)", the Hobbit was sold in sets with the Lord of the Rings, housed "in a slipcase, gold (or red) printed paper over boards, featuring Heraldic devices by Tolkien." This design was used until 1983, when the covers were changed again. So this set is from that period, 1973 - 1983. Very unusual to find a set that has not been opened after 30 or 40 years. The case shows one lightly bumped corner, shrinkwrap is still intact with a few of the scattered holes and scrapes that are common, and the spines of the four books are in perfect condition. They do not appear to be faded or tanned in any way. A near perfect find for the collector. Interior photos and photos of the covers are from another opened set, just for illustrative purposes. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1746

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Four Paperback Book Boxset from 1979, Unread, Uncreased Spines, Near Fine Condition, Gold Slipcase.
New York: Ballantine Books, 1979. J.R.R. Tolkien. 2nd Edition. Mass Market Paperback. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A four volume paperback set housed in the Publishers original Gold pictorial slipcase, featuring the Heraldic symbols that were drawn by J.R.R. These paperback books are in Near Fine condition, with no tanning to the spines. All four books appear unread, showing no creases to the spines. Still fit into the box, not quite as tightly as usual. No names or markings whatsoever, the textblock is very clean and bright, unlike most sets from this era. The slipcase has very few minor rubs, but no bumped corners, all edges of the gold papers still stuck down, not loose as often found. One tiny rub with minor loss to the rear lower spine fold area, no other edgewear noted. Overall a Near Fine set in beautiful condition. The Hobbit is a 73rd printing, The Fellowship is a 68th printing, The Two Towers is a 65th printing, and the Return of the King is a 61st printing, from Nov 1978 thru Aug 1979. Hammond and Anderson's, A Descriptive Bibliography notes that "after the 40th (March 1973) and no later than the forty-second (September 1973)", the Hobbit was sold in sets with the Lord of the Rings, housed "in a slipcase, gold (or blue, or red) printed paper over boards, featuring Heraldic devices by Tolkien." This design was used until 1983, when the covers were changed again. So this set is an early one from that period. Very unusual to find a set that has not been damaged after almost 40 years. A great find for the collector. Minor rubbing to the slipcase, the only minor fault. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Item #1763

The Lord of the Rings set is an 11th/8th/8th printing respectively. The Silmarillion is a 4th printing. This set features a set of the unused drafts of Tolkien artwork for the dustjackets. The Lord of the Rings - Comprised of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Lord of the Rings - Original 1963 UK Deluxe Set, in Original Pauline Baynes Triptych Slipcase, Signed By the Author.
London: Allen & Unwin, 1963. J.R.R. Tolkien. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings, Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by George Allen & Unwin in 1963. The true 1st Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". The Fellowship of the Ring is signed by the author, J.R.R. Tolkien, to the title page. A wonderful provenance on this signature, as it comes with a note signed by Merlin Unwin, the son of Rayner Unwin. It states that The Fellowship, "belonged to my father Rayner Unwin (Tolkien's editor and publisher) and was kept in his personal library at our family home in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire. After his death in 2000 it remained there until the death of his widow, Carol, in 2012. Merlin Unwin". The young lad whose book report was instrumental in the publishing of the Hobbit, kept this signed copy for many years. Has the initials A.R.R. to the back of the free endpaper. It has been added to this partial set, which had the original slipcase and the other two books, to complete this lovely set. I know of only one other signed set of this Deluxe Edition, which was given to Pauline Baynes, and recently sold for an extremely high price at auction. This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, and the original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Very Good Plus condition showing some light rubbing and marks to the covers, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, Initials to the back free endpaper, with no other writing or inscriptions in any of the books, except for the authors signature. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The original maps are all present, and have no tears or misfolds, nor any browning to the folds as often happens. The spine of the Two Towers is only slightly lighter in color, less so than the common flaw with this edition. Seems to only occur with the Two Towers, and rarely the other two books. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has some minor splits starting to the entry corners, but very little rubbing to the back corners, and no bumped corners as is often found. Clean and bright, one of the nicest I've run across in many years. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues, with the signed copy added, makes a marvelous set for the Tolkien enthusiast. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, one small scuff to the back side edge, but whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce signed set with it's original Pauline Baynes illustrated slipcase. A full leather clamshell case has been crafted to house this wonderful set, including the original slipcase. The clamshell features full black leather with recessed panels, holding reproductions of Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. A beautiful presentation to house and protect this extraordinary set. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Item #1228
